28 Feb - Tue - "Voices from the Basement", documentary film

Friends of the Winchester Public Library are sponsoring a showing of the film "Voices from the Basement", a documentary by Michael Bavaro about Boston’s beloved 100-year-old icon – the original Filene’s Basement. The film is a collection of stories told by the people who worked and shopped there captured through newsreels, archival footage, vintage photographs and audio recordings. The film is a journey back to a time when the American Dream was accessible to everyone who walked through the doors of The Basement.

The producers of the film will be there to discuss the film afterwards. This program is made possible by a grant from the John & Mary Murphy Educational Foundation and is free and open to the public.

    15 Feb - Wed - Sneaking Food

Have Your Garden and Eat It Too

Do you want your garden to fit in to your community, fulfilling your own and your neighbors’ sense of esthetics? Do you find you also wish to grow more food on your property?

These are the issues Demetra Tseckares, of Gardens by Demetra, will explore with the audience at her upcoming talk, Sneaking Food.

This talk is aimed at people who want to “farm” their yards without putting in a dedicated vegetable garden, notes Demetra. She will explore simple strategies to “sneak in” veggies and fruits to an existing landscape. She’ll talk about basic landscape “rules,” and breaking them.

Issues brought by audience members will also be discussed.

Join Demetra and stock up on great ideas to add beauty and deliciousness to your gardens.

    Hosted by Sustainable Winchester.

Tree at library The Norway Maple that graced the front yard of the Library for many years had to be removed as only half of the tree was viable. It had previously been wired to support weakened areas and it has had preventive treatments annually. For the past two years its removal has been discussed. The wind storm a few weeks took more branches and it was time. We are considering replacements. Our landscape architect has recommended two suitable replacements and we are looking into it.
